SCHOOL & YOUTH ACTIVITIES:

The Powder Monkey Tour @ USS Constellation Museum  This tour focuses on the lives and activities of the young sailors who served on board US Naval vessels during the American Civil War.  "Powder Monkey" was the nickname given for young sailors ages 11 to 17 who held the official rating of "ships boy".  Young sailors would haul gun powder from the lower decks to the upper decks to be used in the ship's guns, hence the name "powder".  In the 19th Century the term "monkey" was applied to anything small, such as a small sailor.  (Adults $10 / Youth $7)

America at Sea @ The Baltimore Maritime Museum.  America at sea is an exclusive "behind the scenes" tour of the WWII Submarine Torsk and the US Coast Guard Cutter Taney, the last surviving warship from the attack on Pearl Harbor.  Our knowledgeable educators guide students through an exploration of the inner workings and rich history of the vessels.  Students learn about the dangers of war, the challenges and responsibilities of peace, and the hardships & glories of life at sea.  (Adults $10 / Youth $7)

Assembly Line @ The Baltimore Museum of Industry  Henry Ford revolutionized car-making by introducing the assembly line into the automotive industry and making it possible to build more cars in less time at a cheaper cost.  After a brief introduction to the assembly line and Ford's Model T, participants take a seat along the line.  Each person performs a single job as the group works together to build replicas of a 1914 moving van.  Participants learn the challenges and benefits of an assembly line and come away with the understanding that each job is equally important in creating a finished product.  Each "worker" also takes home a van that he/she helps create!  (Youth $7)
